The World Medical Association (WMA) unanimously passed a revised resolution on ‘Violence against Doctors’ in its recently held General Assembly at Berlin, Germany. This resolution was framed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA).

The revised resolution policy, titled "Workplace violence against health care professionals," was drafted by Dr. Ravi Wankhedkar, former IMA president and incumbent WMA treasurer.

Dr. Wankhedkar stated that the draft made by the IMA being accepted on an international platform is a big achievement. He added that in April, at the general assembly held in Berlin, it was decided that the WMA statement on violence in the health sector by patients would undergo a major revision. Hence, he volunteered to undertake the task of drafting the revised resolution.

The revised statement by the WMA advocated that all people have the right to work in a safe environment without the threat of violence. The statement noted that workplace violence includes both physical and non-physical violence, such as psychological violence, intimidation, and cyber harassment. The statement also mentioned social media harassment faced by doctors, for instance, when doctors participate in public programs like debates they are often confronted with malicious messages on social media, death threats, and intimidating home visits.
